Saints Super Bowl Win – Mixed Bag for Sports Bettors

As the trumpets blare down and the gold and black confetti is picked up following the New Orleans Saints 31-17 victory in Super Bowl XLIV, what is left for online sports bettors is a mixed bag of defeats and some surprising betting victories.

With over 60% of online bettors choosing the Indianapolis Colts to cover the underdog Saints by at least 5 points, Vegas and popular online sportsbooks such as Bodog and Sportsbook.com came out on top, however over 70% of bettors who took the Moneyline went with the Saints, balancing out some of the action.

The biggest surprise for many online sports bettors was the game going UNDER the total points of 56.5. A large share of the betting public jumped on this line (even though it was rather high) and took a wallop as the total points came to 48. The great thing about sports betting, however, is there’s always another chance to come back on top. Bettors who weren’t taken to the cleaners can be thankful that this month brings so many big sporting events such as NASCAR, NBA betting and MMA tickets while everyone’s favorite wagering time – NCAA Basketball’s March Madness – is just over a month away.

For those of you who are Colts fans, there are silver linings in the gut-wrenching loss. In one of the more popular prop bets, Peyton Manning went over the 300 yards passing mark (netting savvy bettors a decent -165) while Drew Brees went under the 300 yards passing mark, shocking the betting public who thought he was a lock to go over (bettors who chose Brees to go under were handsomely rewarded at +130). And while the party in the Bayou keeps going on all night long, the betting public remains unconvinced – Indianapolis is already a 13/2 favorite to win Super Bowl XLV with San Diego next at 8/1. The new Super Bowl Champions are packed amongst a few other teams at 10/1, although given the scene on Bourbon Street it will probably be around 5 months before they even notice.
