New England vs. New York: SB XLVI Game Day Preview

We have been studying this match-up, along with discussing it, for two weeks now. This will be our final word on Super Bowl XLVI prior to kickoff. Makes no bones about it, this was a very difficult contest to handicap. The public likes the G-Men and, just like 2008, we are not in that same camp.

On one hand we have the high flying New York Football Giants who have crushed all-comers since Week 16 of the 2011 NFL regular season. On the other hand we have the New England Patriots who are back in the big game for the fifth time in elven years.

Tom Brady is looking to join his boyhood idle Joe Montana, and Steeler great Terry Bradshaw, as the only quarterbacks with four Super Bowl wins. Eli Manning is trying to take the mantle from big brother Peyton as the best QB from Archie’s house. We’ll back the vet with a chip on his shoulder.

New England head coach Bill Belichick is trying to tie Steelers lengendary field general Chuck Noll for most Super Bowl wins with four. Giants head man Tom Coughlin is trying to beat the Patriots for the third time in as many tries. Colonel Coughlin will also get in on the “Greatest Coaches Ever” talk if he can capture his second Super Bowl title in five years. We don’t see that happening.

Super Bowl XLVI Betting Lines – Patriots vs. Giants Free Picks & Predictions

Though it has bounced around between -2.5 and -3 in favor of the Patriots, it looks like the line is going to settle in at a field goal at most online betting websites. That’s the case at TopBet.com who have the Patriots as -3 (-105) point chalk and -130 as money line favorites.

You can also back the Giants at +3 (-115) on the spread and +110 on the ML. The Total opened at 55 points on most betting boards but the number has since dropped to 53.5 (-110) at TopBet.

Back in 2008 we were all over the Patriots as double digit chalk and we were in a huge minority then as well. Threat Out Of The Backfield – Power Back Dual

Playing with nicks and bruises all season, the Giants backfield has only been together as a unit since about Week 13. Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs are not the fastest guys in the NFL but they can both take the punishment that comes with running between the tackles. Since Week 13, the Bradshaw/Jacobs combo has produced 978 total yards and eight touchdowns. When the Patriots overload to stop the pass, either of these backs can hit pay dirt up the middle.

Confidence From A Tough Schedule

New York has played teams with a combined 82-46 record over the past eight weeks. By contrast, the Patriots have played teams with a 55-70 record over the same time period. The Giants had quality games against the Packers (15-1) twice, along with the 49ers (13-3) and the Falcons (10-6) once each, over the last eight weeks. Prior to the AFC Championship battle with Baltimore Ravens, New England had not played a team with a winning record since they lost 25-17 to the Steelers during NFL Week 8 action.

Been There – Done That – Do It Again?

Though the title may seem a little exaggerated – until you realize that the National Football Conference has a record of 31-14 when it comes to coin toss wins, including the last 14 in a row.

Conventional wisdom states a coin tossed 100 times has a chance at landing either side up 50% of the time. That is also fairly factual when it comes to the Super Bowl coin flip.

Over the past 45 Super Bowls, Tails has come up 23 times and Heads 22 times – including the last three tosses. Neither side has had a run greater than four years in a row as Heads has done it once and Tails twice.

Prior to the three straight wins by Heads, Tails had run off a 9-2 record including four straight wins twice. The recent run by Heads is their third 3-peat (not counting their run of four straight) and Tails stopped the streak of the previous two runs.

Dating back to the 1998 NFL season the underdogs own an impressive 8-4 record against the spread. The Packers covered in the 2010 NFC Title game – halting a run of three straight covers by the pups. Home teams have 6-4 straight up record in the last ten NFC Championship games.

Game total bettors have padded their bankroll by betting on the OVER in recent NFC Title games. Last years Packers vs. Bears tilt stayed UNDER the line, but the OVER has been golden in seven of the past ten contests. The Giants last win, 23-20 in 2007 over the Packers, surpassed the total.

Big Blue has had at least one player with over 100 yards receiving in eight of their last nine games. Back in Week 10, the start of a Giants four game losing streak, San Francisco scored a 27-20 home win over New York. The game was close as SF stopped a 16 play NY drive, that went for 52 yards and ended at the Niners ten yard line, to seal the win. Ahmad Bradshaw sat out that game and the G-Men are a much better offense when he is on the field – as he will be Sunday.

Eli Manning will need to be aware of Niners cornerback Carlos Rogers after the first time Pro Bowler picked him off twice back in the Week 10 contest. A Giants win gets them a rematch of the previously mentioned Patriots Super Bowl game, or the Super Bowl XXXV loss to the Ravens.

While the future is bright in San Francisco, and they have a tough as nails defense, we see their 2011 run ending today. As is the case in the Patriots vs. Ravens AFC Championship, the better QB will be the deciding factor in this contest. Start spreading the New York vs. New England news.

Being on the road was not good for Baltimore this season as they went 4-4 and lost to the likes of the lowly Jaguars and Seahawks. The Ravens will make it to the Super Bowl, for the second time in their 16 year history, with an upset win.

AFC Championship: Point Spread and Game Total Betting Trends

Homes teams in the AFC Championship are on a pretty decent run as the last five homies have won straight up and have covered as chalk in four of five contests. The lone exception was the Patriots who defeated the San Diego Chargers 21-12 in the 2007 AFC Championship game but failed to cover the monster 14 point spread.

It hasn’t always been that way though as the visitors had won six of the previous nine games, including the Patriots 24-17 loss to the Steelers as -10 point home favorites during the 2001 NFL season. Chalk teams are 7-3 since 2001 and have covered three straight.

In the Super Bowl era, dating back to the 1966 NFL season, total scoring in AFC Championship history has gone over 50 points nine times during the 45 games played. Recently, the AFC Title game has been like a well flowing ATM for OVER bettors. The total has gone past the line in three straight games and eight of the last ten contests.

In the Year of the Quarterback, not to mention the TE position, we like the vastly superior pivot in this contest. New England is on a mission, they are on fire, and they get to play in their own backyard.  We would even venture a bet that Bill Belichick and the Brady Bunch would welcome a Super Bowl re-match against QB Eli Manning and the G-Men. We all know how that ended.

We liked Baltimore as the AFC Super Bowl finalist all the way back to August. If this contest was being played in M&T Bank Stadium we would be tempted to back the Purple Birds. One or two loses on the road can be shrugged off – losing four times, to teams with a 29-35 record, is a trend.

A frosty cold Green Bay, Wisconsin welcomes the Giants as they get set to face the Packers. Green Bay has won 14 straight games at Lambeau Field as they have not lost at home since a 23-20 October 17, 2010 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

New York has been a steadily improving team since Week 14 as they have won four of their last five contests including a 24-2 beat down of the Atlanta Falcons during Wild Card weekend. They’ve been doing it with improved health on both sides of the ball.
