Fantasy Football 2010 Rankings – Running Backs

Ranking fantasy football running backs can be a risky business. No position in fantasy football has more players go from beast to bust or vice versa faster than the running back position.

Ranking the RB position is more science than luck. The teams offensive coordinator, offensive line, the quarterback, receiving core, team depth chart, the players past history and his age all factor into RB rankings.

Fantasy Football Running Backs – Rules For Ranking The Studs

We make no secret of the fact that we believe a successful fantasy season begins with selecting a stud at the running back position. Not many Fantasy Championships have been won without RB who is a mule.

The top five backs are pretty basic year in and year out. It’s finding the diamonds in the rough (Matt Forte 307 FP in 2008 as a rookie) that proves real ranking skills.

The biggest mistake a fantasy owner can make when ranking running backs is to neglect a teams depth chart. A classic example of this has been happening in New England for years. The Patriots need a separate bus just to transport their offensive back field from the hotel to the stadium on game days.

Four different running backs rushed for the most yards in a single game for Patriots during the 2009 NFL season. This is a situation you want to avoid like the plague and needs to be a top priority when deciding on your RB rankings. If the pool is too deep – stay out and avoid the weekly guessing game.

The St. Louis Rams are a mirror opposite to the Patriots and a classic example of having no depth at the running back position. RB Steven Jackson carried the mail 324 times for the Rams in 2009 while RB Kenneth Darby toted the the rock just 27 times.

Jackson and others like him always get a ranking boast by being the unchallenged, go to guy in their teams backfield.
