2010 Fantasy Football Rankings – Quarterbacks

The explosion of Fantasy Football has spawned a new wave of Internet web sites dedicated to the ranking of fantasy players.

Players are ranked based on past history as well the situation they are in for the upcoming season.

While there is a degree of skill required when setting up player rankings, in the end, it is all a matter of opinion. Study the past but be mindful of the present.

Fantasy Football Quarterbacks – Ranking The Stars

When I am deep in my bunker drawing up my player ranking list I am always respectful of the past but I put way more stock in the here and now.

Out of the four fantasy skill positions, the quarterback position is probably the easiest position to rank. It is very rare for a quarterback to become an overnight sensation.

St. Louis Rams QB Kurt Warner made a huge splash in 1999 when he went from stocking grocery shelves to passing for 4,348 yards and 41 touchdowns but that is an exception rather than the rule.

That gap between the top overall quarterback and the tenth overall pivot usually comes in at around 110 fantasy points. In 2009 the gap was 109 points and in 2008 it came in at 106 points.

Fantasy Football Quarterback Ranking Rules

The best rules of thumb when doing your quarterback rankings is to look at their past, the offensive style the QB plays in and any key player loses or additions. Despite his teams success, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has never been mistaken for a stud at the QB position.

The Steelers play smash mouth, pound it on the ground football. That makes Big Ben a fantasy caretaker rather than a star because you don’t get fantasy points based on your number of handoffs.

The Eagles traded QB Donovan McNabb to the Redskins during the 2010 offseason and have handed control of the offense to QB Kevin Kolb. As a first year starter, Kolb will have a relatively short leash and we expect a slightly more conservative offense Philadelphia this season so you have to rank him accordingly.

NcNabb on the other hand goes from having an offense stacked with talent to offense with considerably less talent. If McNabb was still with the Eagles in 2010 he would be ranked in the top five at the QB position. With the lack of talent around him in Washington, he barely cracks our top ten list.
