CFL Opening Weekend Finale: Saskatchewan vs. Edmonton

Canadian Football League Week 1 action has produced a ton of fireworks. That’s only fitting as Canada Day celebrations are ongoing across the Great White North. The first three games produced 71, 73, and 74 points.

That’s a fairly tough act to follow for the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Edmonton Eskimos as they close out the CFL Week One action at Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at 3:30 PM ET.

Green Riders are retooled and ready for Grey Cup 101 run

After a 2012 CFL season that produced a mediocre 8-10 overall record, Saskatchewan spent the off-season retooling. Rider Nation is hoping that the moves pay off as the Roughriders attempt to earn a spot Grey Cup 101 that will be played on their home turf at Mosaic Stadium at Taylor Field. The additions of wide receiver Geroy Simon, in a trade with the British Columbia Lions, along with key free agent signings of DB Weldon Brown, DB Dwight Anderson, and DE Ricky Foley, will help Saskatchewan on both sides of the ball. QB Darian Durant and stud RB Kory Sheets are ready to lead an offense that’s capable of producing a ton of points on the Prairies this season.

More questions than answers face the Green and Gold as CFL 2013 opens

After a tumultuous end to the 2012 CFL season, plus an off-season that was rocked with various management and players moves, the 2013 CFL preseason was just as rough for Edmonton. The Eskimos lost one half of their two-man quarterback competition as Matt Nichols was lost for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament on his right knee. That leaves recently acquired QB Mike Reilly as the main man for the Green and Gold. After three seasons as a back-up in British Columbia, Reilly will start his fourth CFL regular-season game today – his first for Edmonton. he will face a stiff challenge from the Green Riders revamped defense in the Alberta Capital today.
