Northern Illinois (10-3 OA 7-1 MAC) probably didn’t imagine hitting double digits wins after they opened the season with a 2-3 record. A Week 3 battle against #7 Wisconsin didn’t help the Huskies early season struggles as they were pummeled 49-7 by the Badgers.

That defeat came on the heels of a 45-42 loss to Kansas. The Huskies must have thought the wheels had come off after a 48-41 loss to unranked Central Michigan in Week 5. Northern Illinois did managed to regroup as they closed out the season with eight straight wins.

Arkansas State (10-2 OA 8-0 Sun Belt) started the season at 1-2 but then rolled through the rest of their 2011 NCAA schedule with nine straight wins. The Red Wolves lone AP Top 25 match-up came in Week 3 against #13 Virginia Tech as the Hokies scored a 26-7 win. Eight of Arkansas State’s ten wins were by 30 points or more.

Even more impressive than their scoring outbursts was the Red Wolves scoring defense. In their ten wins, Arkansas State allowed an average of just 17 points a game. The Huskies owned the Nation’s 17th ranked pass offense to go along with the 15th best scoring defense in the NCAA.
