Baseball Free Pick: Red Sox vs. Orioles Betting Odds

Our “September to Remember” has turned into a constantly shifting run of hot and cold over the past week or so. With the 2011 MLB season winding down, it’s becoming more and more difficult to determine which teams care and which teams don’t.

That being said, we are looking to turn up the heat as we head back to the Boys of Summer for today’s baseball betting Free Pick.

One team that should care is the Boston Red Sox who host the Baltimore Orioles at 7:10 PM ET on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 from historic Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts.

Red Sox Stumble in September: Wild Card Race Tightens

Boston has been downright dreadful in September as they have dropped 15 of 20 games and their Wild Card lead has shrunk to just two games. Forget abut them winning the American League East as the Yankees margin has bulged to six full games.

EDITORS UPDATE (5:35 PM ET): “The Yankees defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-2 today and have clinched at least a Wild Card berth. They can clinch the American League East with a win in the night cap of the doubleheader and a Boston loss.

Tampa is now 2.5 games back of Boston in the Wild Card race. A Boston win, along with a Rays loss tonight, would give the Red Sox a 3.5 game lead over the Rays.“

With Tampa Bay two games back, and the Angels 3.5 out, the Sox should be beating up on bottom feeders like Baltimore. Instead, they have dropped two of three contests in this four game set.

Pitching has been a problem in this series as balls have been flying out of Fenway faster than tea off the Dartmouth. The combined winning margin has been 31-29 over the first three games.

To their credit, the Orioles are still battling as many of their players are fighting for a job in 2012. That scenario is something that always needs to be considered when betting on Major League Baseball in late September.
